Our Story
A few years ago, as my son was leaving home on his way to college, I had the opportunity to share some thoughts with him about his accomplishments as a young man, what he meant to his mother and I and offer advice on this new time in his life's journey. This was part of a school retreat where parents were asked to share, in writing, words of wisdom and encouragement that would serve as a bridge or catalyst to their son's or daughter's continuation of life's journey.
The hardest part of this exercise, for this dad anyway, was to find, not just the right words, but words that would convey sincerity and basic truths. Words my son would recognize and hopefully use and own throughout his life. I think many parents share this same anxiety of not knowing the right words at the right time, though desperately we try.
Though our times were years apart, our journeys would share many of the same paths. We would set a course and from time to time we will lose our way. We will need help and direction to get back on track. This is why it is important to turn to those who truly care. So I shared with my son what I felt was important for a balanced and successful journey:
- Make GOD part of your everyday life
- Remain close to your FAMILY
- Seek and nurture worthy FRIENDS
- Pursue KNOWLEDGE with a passion
I also reminded him that the path he would choose in life is no less important than the people he will invite to join him on his journey.
We have aptly used these four words (God, Family, Friends, Knowledge) in the design of a medallion called The Life Compass to share this message with others. This beautiful medalion will be that gentle reminder of what is important for the journey, everyone's journey. The Life Compass is appropriate for everyone: brothers, sisters, moms and dads, relatives and friends. There is help for everyone if we seek those who truly care. The time is now...reach out to someone and be a part of his or her journey.
The Life Compass, directions for life... a message for a lifetime.
Sincerely,
